A Textile Design Department graduate, presented at the DIFC Art Nights Exhibition in Dubai
Shenkar International School supported Shir Melech, 2023 Textile Design Department graduate, presenting her Final Project at the DIFC Art Nights exhibition In Dubai. The exhibition, taking place for the 16th year is a platform for young artists from all over the world, enabling their exposure in the art world.
The UnEarth project, presented by Melech, consists of hand-printed fabric sheets using Chino-Type technology, presenting different compositions dealing with the relationship between us and the environment, the sea in particular.
The designer, lamenting the polluted sea, dives into an unknown land, from the depths of the sea - the subconscious. She observes, listens and collects parts that she floats on land - to the conscious, in order to be able to see the whole.
These parts are represented by broken glass she creates into endless structures that commemorate the current crisis, like glaciers disappearing from the world, undoubtedly creating a utopian state of unity between the subconscious and the changing ecology.
The glass shards are placed during exposure to light on a cloth smeared with a solution sensitive to UV rays, the Chino-Type. The refracted light creates complex textures on the fabric, functioning as a receptor. The color, with other materials, flows on the fabric in different forms, between the glasses preventing the color from being washed off the fabric altogether. The final result is a depth of shades of the infinite blue - the sea.
