The Industrial Design Department hosted an Artisan Master Class with Prof. Gerald Weckesser of East Carolina University for a Canoe building workshop

Throughout history, the canoe has served as a versatile tool for transportation, fishing, hunting and geographical exploration. The structure of the canoe is based on techniques and traditions of handcrafted wood and leatherwork, developed simultaneously in Europe and North America. The workshop enabled students to learn the principles of professional woodworking, canvasing, hydrodynamics, material and structural strength. They specialized in various techniques of craftsmanship.

Gerald Weckesser, a renowned artist and a master in woodworking and metal, is faculty at the School of Design and Art, East Carolina University and also offering artist workshops at the Penland School of Craft.

The 7 days Master Class held in the beginning of the 2023 – 2024 academic year, was made possible thanks to the support of Shenkar International School. It was part of the mandatory 'Furniture' course led by faculty, Neil Nenner, Pini Leibovich and Oded Webman. It concluded successfully in the Yarkon river, where students showcased and sailed their canoes, built by them in the workshop.
