Safety

By and large, Israel is a safe country to live and travel in, both in terms of personal and collective safety. Israel’s crime rate is lower than in most major cities in Europe and the US. Violent crimes are uncommon and typically limited in severity due to strict gun laws, while petty crime mainly occurs in crowded tourist locations (in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem’s Old City). Vehicle theft is a concern however, with bicycles and scooters a popular target!

The security environment in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza is complex and tensions remain high. The Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) both make considerable efforts to police major tourist attractions and ensure security in places where foreigners frequently travel. In the past 20 years, Israel’s military industry has developed many tools to deal with national security threats, most notably the Iron Dome Missile Defense System that protects the airspace above densely populated areas.

While Israel is perfectly equipped to ensure the security of people within its borders, we recommend that you be in contact with your home embassy in case of a national emergency in order to take the necessary precautions and to take advice on whether or not to leave the country.

In case of emergency:

In the event of a siren warning of a rocket or missile, all buildings are equipped with a bomb shelter on every floor. Older buildings have concrete reinforced stairwells that act as the assigned safety spaces. If you are in an open place such as a park or field, locate a bench or table underneath which to hide. If there is nothing nearby, lay on your stomach with your legs crossed and your hands protecting your head. The Iron Dome defense system will take care of the rocket and the siren will end when the threat has been neutralized. Most importantly, it is vital to remain calm and not to panic.
