Prof. Zvi Koren Receives an Emeritus Title
The Shenkar community congratulates Prof. Zvi Koren on his appointment as Professor Emeritus. This honorary degree was awarded to Prof. Koren by the Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art for his many years of activity in the field of teaching and research at the college, for his contribution to the Department of Chemical Engineering, and for his extensive research activities.
Prof. Koren is an expert in the application of instrumental chemistry utilizing chromatographic and spectrometric methods for the identification of organic dyes from plant and animal sources on archeological items. He currently serves as the Director of the Edelstein Center for the Analysis of Ancient Artifacts as well as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Prof. Koren also served as Shenkar's Dean of Students, and as the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering (1999 – 2004). Previously, in the USA, he was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering at The Cooper Union college in Manhattan (1977 – 1991), rose to be a Full Professor and also was appointed to be the Chairman of the department.
Prof. Koren completed his doctoral studies in Physical Chemistry at the City University of New York (CUNY), and he holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from Brooklyn College. Over the years, he has published about 100 articles, most of them as a sole author, especially on his expertise, about which he is frequently invited to lecture around the world: the chemistry of natural archeological dyes including the biblical colors. He also has published papers in chemical engineering and industrial chemistry, the chemistry of the enrichment of stable isotopes, quantum mechanics, and on various topics in general, inorganic, and physical chemistry.
In 2015 – 2016, Prof. Koren was selected as a Visiting Professor in the European Union's Erasmus Mundus Scholars programs at the Politecnico di Torino and also at the Universita di Bologna (at Ravenna) in Italy. He was also selected to be a member in the European organization’s COST-COSCH program, which deals with research on color. In 2012, he received a special award from Shenkar's President for his Contribution to Promoting Excellence, Creativity and Innovation at the college, and in 2006 and 2018 he was selected an Outstanding Faculty Member.
