Our experience in Athens: students from the software engineering and chemical engineering departments share their insights from an international startup tour in Athens, Greece
In May 2023, Shenkar invited a group of students from the departments of chemical and software engineering to join Shenkar’s delegation to Athens, where they joined a tour of the Greek ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship with Hochschule Neu-Ulm university.
The students — Adva Shlomit Appleboim and Waleed Younnes from the Department of Software Engineering and Bar Nachmias Avraham from the Department of Chemical Engineering — began the tour at the renowned social innovation center Impact Hub Athens, where they learned about the center’s mission of cultivating collaborations in the city and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere.
The students also took part in the HackAthens hackathon, where they worked alongside students from the University of West Attica. “It was an excellent opportunity to implement our knowledge and skills while working with others,” says Waleed Younnes.
At the end of the tour, the students visited some of Athens’ key institutions, including the Hellenic–German Chamber of Commerce, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (ACEin).
The delegation returned with new insights about the Greek financial landscape, Greek innovation, and the business opportunities it offers. The tour also helped expand Shenkar’s connections with academic institutions around the world.
