Summer preparatory courses

Each summer, Shenkar offers eight-week courses in mathematics, physics and English. Students registered for the Plastics Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments are required to take a preparatory course in Chemistry.

The goal of the summer courses is to refresh and supplement knowledge in order to bring students to the level required for academic studies. The payment required for the courses is not included in the basic tuition.

All students accepted for studies in one of the departments of the Faculty of Engineering are required to take summer courses with the following exceptions:

• Students with a matriculation grade of at least 85 in Mathematics and Physics at a level of at least 4 units, or a grade of at least 75 at a level of 5 units.
• Applicants who completed Practical Engineering studies in the year preceding their acceptance to Shenkar and received an average grade of 90 and above in mathematics, are except from the preparatory course in mathematics only.
• Students who are accepted after the preparatory course in physics has already started or who did not participate in the preparatory program for whatever reason, will be required to take Physics 0 during the first semester and the Physics 1 course will be deferred to the second semester. The Physics 2 course will be held during the summer.
• An exemption from the preparatory program in English at the pre-basic and basic levels will be awarded to practical engineers based on their score on the national psychometric exam in English, the Amir test, or on proficiency tests conducted at Shenkar. Practical engineers are exempt from the pre-basic level.
• Students accepted for study at the Department of Software Engineering are exempt from the preparatory program in physics.

Preparatory program in English

Applicants will be required to take a preparatory course in English at the pre-basic D and basic C levels as follows here.

Notes:

• Students who are accepted after the preparatory course in physics has already started or who did not participate in the preparatory program for whatever reason, will be required to take Physics 0 during the first semester and the Physics 1 course will be deferred to the second semester. The Physics 2 course will be held during the summer. In addition, a preparatory course in Calculus 1 will be required.
• An exemption from the preparatory program in English at the pre-basic and basic levels will be awarded to practical engineers based on their score on the national psychometric exam in English, the Amir test, or on proficiency tests conducted at Shenkar. Practical engineers are exempt from the pre-basic level.

Payments for the preparatory program

• Fee for the preparatory program in Physics: 1,800 shekels
• Fee for the preparatory program in Mathematics: 1,800 shekels
• Fee for the preparatory program in Chemistry: 200 shekels
• Fee for the preparatory program in English (Level D) pre-basic: 998 shekels
• Fee for the preparatory program in English (Level C) basic: 998 shekels
• Fee for the exemption test in Mathematics or Physics: 120 shekels
• Fee for the Amiram test: 260 shekels
• Demobilized IDF soldiers with a combat soldier ID are eligible for a one-time 50% refund of the fee for the preparatory program; the refund is issued after the start of the school year.
• The fee for the preparatory program may be paid in two installments.
• A 10% deduction will be offered to students registering for two or more preparatory programs.

Discontinuing studies in the preparatory program

Students who decide to discontinue their studies must notify the registration office in writing. The termination of studies will take effect on the date the cancellation form is received at the registration office. The calculation for refunding the program fee will be made according to the notification date.  

English studies

Every student at an institution of higher learning in Israel is required to demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in the English language and to obtain an exemption from studying the language by the end of the first year of study. The level of English / exemption is determined by the score on English tests: psychometric, Amir, Amirim.

Eligibility for an exemption is based on the following criteria:

• A score of 134 or above on the English section of the national psychometric exam or the Amirim exam.
• A score of 234 or above on the Amir exam of the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation.
• A student who has already earned an undergraduate degree from an institution of higher learning in Israel.
• A student who studied in a recognized institution of higher learning in Israel and did not earn an undergraduate degree, but successfully completed English language study.

Testing for levels of English study - Students who do not receive an exemption under one of the criteria listed above will be assigned to a level based on their score on assessment tests (psychometric, Amir) as follows here.

Exempt

• The English level of applicants or students who are tested more than once (and/or on more than one proficiency test) will be determined according to the highest test result.
• Instructions for registering for the psychometric exam and the Amir proficiency test in English can be found on the website of the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation.
• According to the directives of the National Council for Higher Education (the Meltz Committee report), English courses at the lower levels (pre-basic, basic and intermediate) require payment in addition to the basic tuition. The cost of each course is 998 shekels. Additional payment is not required for advanced courses in English; these courses are covered by the basic tuition.

 

Tuition

• The tuition at Shenkar is the university tuition set by the Council for Higher Education. The tuition is linked to the inflation index of July 2015.
• In addition to the basic tuition, each student is required to pay additional fees.
• Students in the Faculty of Design are also charged for the use of materials. The amount charged will be defined prior to the start of the school year by Shenkar's administration, in consultation with the Students' Association.
• Applicants accepted for studies will be asked to make an initial tuition payment, using the payment slip attached to the acceptance letter. The payment must be made by the date specified on the payment slip in order to secure the student's place in the incoming class.

Payment options

• Full payment in advance: Students who pay the full tuition by September 14, 2015 will be entitled to a 2.5% discount from the basic tuition, including students who use their military service deposit to pay. (When paying at a bank, you will need to bring the acceptance letter, the payment slip and a document showing that Shenkar is a recognized institution.) Students accepted after this date will not receive this discount, even if they pay the full tuition in advance.
• Bank payments: The student's bank account (or the bank account of the person paying the tuition) will be charged at five defined dates. The standing bank order will be in effect for the entire school year at Shenkar.
• Foreign students will pay tuition that is 25% higher than the basic tuition.
• Students receiving full or partial funding (Israeli students and foreign citizens) from their employers or institutional, governmental or other public funding will pay tuition that is 25% higher than the basic tuition.
• Students funded by the Student Authority at the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption are required to bring the tuition office an original commitment from the Student Authority by the beginning of the school year. • A special loan for students can be obtained from Bank Leumi on Bialik Street in Ramat Gan. For details, contact the tuition office at Shenkar.

Scholarships and awards

• Living stipends: Shenkar's scholarship fund offers financial assistance to students according to their eligibility. Details are provided in the information system for students prior to the start of the school year.
• Awards for excellence in studies: Outstanding students in each department will be awarded monetary prizes contributed by the Friends of Shenkar.
• Refund of registration fees - New students who hold combat soldier IDs will receive a refund of their registration fees at the end of the first semester.
• 50% discount in fees for preparatory programs - will be refunded to demobilized IDF combat soldiers (with combat soldier IDs) by the end of the first semester.
