Conserving History: Students from the Department of Textile Design Restored the Curtains in the Ben-Gurion House
The private home of David and Paula Ben-Gurion has become an archival, educational and cultural center, as was Ben-Gurion’s intention when he bequeathed his house to the State of Israel in his will.
The details in the textile that made up the unique character of the house have been replaced over the years and remain only as faded memories in pictures and stories.
In the course, which is a collaborative project between the Department of Textile Design and the Ben-Gurion House conservation department, third-year students received stock footage, conducted research on the house, the extraordinary characters that resided in it and the textiles that were in it and creatively and professionally restored the stylish curtains that embellished the house in order to revive an element of the homey design from David and Paula’s lifetime.
The students in the course were also requested to propose their own textile design ideas with the goal of reviving the place and its values in the public consciousness and connecting between the public and the house, and between the past and the present.
There was a wide variety of student proposals ranging from textile gates on Ben Gurion Street in Tel Aviv, light up products in the house’s souvenir shop, an environmental conservation kit and more.
The selected curtains, which will be generously printed by Kornit Digital, will be hung up in the house. Once the renovations are finished in August, the house will be opened to the public.
Special thanks to conservation supervisor Aurora Lattarulo, Ben-Gurion House Executive Director Nelly Markman, course instructors Yaara Perry and Dana Benshalom and to Kornit Digital for sponsoring the printing of the curtains.
